There sure is a lot on the Internet about team building. There are self-help guru’s, management consultants, and this new category we call coaches which come in a variety of forms; both personal coaches and business coaches. They all tell us how to build teams stronger and quicker. In this new paradigm most of them talk about consensus and collaboration in team building. However, we must be careful in listening to all of these so-called experts.
Why do humans built teats in the first place? The reason that we build teams is to accomplish a task, achieve objectives, secure goals, and most of all to win. If teams are built to win, and prevail over the competition then there needs to be more emphasis on winning and less emphasis on consensus and collaboration. First of all, no one should be on the team who isn’t interested in winning and the consensus should be a given, and the collaboration part should be quite simple.
Name a person you know who joins a team to lose?
The team must develop strategies to win, and they need to be on the same page and committed to the cause. If you ask everyone to join a consensus and collaboration project, and yet, at the same time ask them to be dedicated and persevere, to win, you send mixed signals.
Indeed, you will have various levels of performance in each team member while achieving those goals. You see, team building is a whole lot more than just consensus and collaboration; thus, if your team is focused more on that than on winning the chances are you will not win even if everyone doesn’t feel warm and fuzzy.
It takes hard work to win, it takes commitment, practice, and you are going to have to break a sweat sometime. Please consider all this.
